Last week the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed a rule to implement the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, a day before the Senate Special Committee on Aging was to hold a hearing about the effect of the rule's delay. The rule was originally to be announced on October 1, 2011 but the deadline was missed.
The proposed rule requires manufacturers of drugs, devices, biologicals, and medical supplies covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or the Children’s Health Insurance Program to track and report payments or other transfers of value they make to physicians and teaching hospitals.
The original data collection start date was scheduled for January 1, 2012 but is now delayed and CMS will issue a final rule to be published in “2012” – no dates given.
So, this gives life science organizations a little breathing room for collecting data for payments being made to health care providers.
